Welcome to Brownes Garden Centre

We might not be able to predict our English summer but at

Brownes there are a few things that you can be sure of:

- A friendly and knowledgeable team to help you with all your garden ideas

- A bright and colourful display of perennial plants

-Bedding plants which will fill pots & containers with sunshine until the autumn!

-A move to more organic methods of gardening

Whether we have a splash or soak summer, we can help.
We sell water butts and also plants that will help soak up surface water.
If we have hot dry spells, we also stock hardy plants,

along with large bags of gravel and mulch to cover beds/pots, preventing water loss.

We also sell automatic drip watering systems which are very water efficient.

tops Tips for June

Don't water the garden at NIGHT! It creates a haven for slugs and snails. Water early in the morning.

Soak plants when you water them, not a light misting, don't water every day, you want to get the plants use to minimal water, the more you water the more they want!

Established plants, soak once a week and then let the roots learn to go deep down to get water, not on the surface, this creates stronger plants.

Newly planted plants water every 3/4 days then reduce. When the weather isn't so hot reduce the watering even more. A good test is to stick your finger in the soil, if it is wet all the way down the soil is wet enough.

Planting up pots or baskets, put a few inches of soil in the bottom, then soak small wshing up sponges in water, cut them up and place on top of the soil, they will help keep the soil damp.

Line pots, (especially terracota) with an empty compost bag to keep more water in, just add a few holes at the bottom.

Vegetables: plant runner beans, squash, sweetcorn.

Cumcumbers and tomoatoes can go outside.

Sow beetroot, carrots, lettuce, peas and raddishes in small batches ever 2 weeks. Trish is our expert if you need any help.

Flowers: sow biannials for next year, start seeds of floxgloves, lupins, sweet wiliams, wall flowers.

Deadhead flowers as much as you can.

Feed flowering plants and fruiting vegetables with potash to enable the plants to flower for longer.
