At Brownes we are VERY ready for spring, particularly after a prolonged wet winter!

​

Our outdoor beds & benches are a filling up with of pots of colour & vibrance. We have an array of perennials, some supplied by Barbara Austin and starting at just £3.00 each. These include alpines, plants for ground cover, as well as ‘cottagey’ Delphiniums, Foxgloves and Hollyhocks, and everything else in between.

It is also the season for planning an area for pollinators & other wildlife in your garden. We have one of the largest ranges of native British wildflower plugs in the Southwest including some rarer varieties such as Meadow Clary.

Planting wildflowers in amongst vegetables and borders is a great way to not only attract pollinators, but also to bring in natural predatory species to control aphids, black fly, and caterpillars etc.

 

Some wildflowers e.g. Birds Foot Trefoil, Sainfoin, & Red Clover also fertilise the soil, dispensing the need for artificial chemical feeds. Other varieties such as Chicory improve soil health & structure. All of which are available to purchase.

NEW for this year, we are offering packs of 6 plugs to create a wild lawn or a wildlife friendly patch of grass. They contain perfectly suited varieties for lawns such as Red Clover, Selfheal, Chamomile and Creeping Thyme, which add both colour & fragrance. Traditionally lawns require a lot maintenance with watering, feeding, mowing & weeding, whereas a wild lawn is self-fertilising, and is resilient during both prolonged dry & wet periods. To produce an abundant supply of flowers for bees, wild lawns can be cut on a high setting about once a month.

For other garden ideas & creations, we also stock a range of aggregates and paving stones, from Bowland Stone, along with a number different of composts to suit even the fussiest of plants. We do have smaller more carry friendly bags and some are more suited to indoor plants. Our main supplier for outdoor compost is RocketGro, which is a local company & is also peat free.
