tops Tips for July
This July try to create a sustainable garden -
reduce wasteful watering.
Apply mulch (a layer of bark, fallen leaves/gravel) to beds, containers and even hanging baskets to prevent water loss and suppress weeds.
Install a drip irrigation system/soaker seeper hose for watering efficiency, saving time and water for a peace of mind when you are away.
Indulge in a bit of 'Xeriscaping' - by incorporating plants that thrive on minimal water e.g. native species which are more resilient.
Plant small trees e.g. crabapple, birches, spindles and cherries in garden beds to offer shade and keep the area cooler.
Avoid bare patches of soil to reduce moisture loss.
Harvest rainwater in containers and waterbutts. (We have a number to choose from including Oak barrels)
Build 'Hügelkultur' beds - an age old technique which involves raised beds filled with decaying wood and organic material. The rotting matter acts as a massive sponge that retains moisture and releases slow-acting nutrients over time.
